Voice over IP (VoIP) project at UT Austin 75% complete

AWS Communications has completed 75% of a project that will change the way that the University of Texas at Austin communicates. AWS is in the process of converting phones from analog to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). VoIP allows users to make calls using broadband Interenet instead of over a regular phone line.

The project includes transitioning 240 buildings and approximately 20-thousand phones to VoIP. The AWS team has completed 75% of the project, while insuring phones have no more than two hours of downtime. Advanced Wireless Solutions CEO Bobby McClung said that team has worked hard to make the transition as smooth as possible.

“I am proud of the project management team. It’s similar to rebuilding an airplane while it’s already in flight,” said McClung.

AWS partnered with Mutual Telecom Services Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Black Box Corporation, for the project. The contract for the project was awarded in 2013, and the transition is expected to be complete in September 2015.
