AWS Communications Completes Public Safety DAS Installation at The Independent, Tallest Residential Building West of the Mississippi
JANUARY 29, 2019 – AUSTIN, TX – AWS Communications, a leading public safety radio integrator, has successfully completed its latest installation at The Independent, Austin’s — and the western United States’ — tallest residential building.
The project consisted of installing vital public safety distributed antenna systems (DAS) throughout the building, to provide first responders with their own dedicated, reliable, crystal-clear radio communications anywhere within the structure.
AWS provided a turnkey solution to The Independent’s developers, taking the project from site survey and design to full commissioning, in coordination with the Austin Fire Department’s fire marshal. The project fully complies with the requirements of the 2018 International Fire Code (IFC).

As Austin’s newest and tallest structure, The Independent represents architectural design unlike any other. As noted, it is the tallest residential building west of the Mississippi River, with a commanding, 360-degree view of Austin and offering 370 total residences. Four tiers offer homeowners a unique unit mix, enabling a wide array of view and living options.
The project was developed by Aspen Heights and CIM, with architecture and interiors designed by Rhode Partners and general contracting by Balfour Beatty. AWS Communications served as the prime contractor for public safety DAS throughout the entire structure and handled every phase of the project exclusively with AWS staff.
